The Highland Wildlife Park is a great day out for any visitor, but for young people it offers a marvellous educational opportunity, helping to meet curricular demands and bring their lessons alive.

PRIMARY
Tours are available for both infant (P1-P3) and primary classes (P4 - P7).   Set topics include Scottish Wildlife (including Conservation, Habitats, Endangered Species), Food Chains, Fur & Feathers, Classification and Animal Stories, but there are endless possibilities (see below).

You can choose a 2.5 hour GUIDED TOUR of the Park, incorporating a short classroom session in our Education Centre and focusing on the animals/topics of your choice.

SECONDARY
All age groups are welcome and there are special tours to suit Standard Grade courses in Science, Biology, Geography and Contemporary Social Studies.   Cross-curricular packages can be designed to suit individual requirements.

Follow-up material is provided whenever possible.

Our Education Officer is happy to devise a session to tie in with your particular Curricular and Social needs.


FURTHER EDUCATION
We welcome study groups from colleges and universities, and our Education Officer would be pleased to assist with field visits to the Park.  Possible topics include: social behaviour, courtship behaviour and species conservation.

The park offers much scope, not just in Environmental studies, Biology and Geography, but also in stimulating English, Art, Photography, Drama and Personal and Social Development.

OPENING TIMES
The Park opens daily (weather permitting) at 10.00 a.m. and pre-booked parties are welcome throughout the year; winter is sometimes better for certain topics.

LENGTH OF VISIT
Infant topics last one hour.  All other groups are generally up to 2.5 hours (not including lunch) with flexible starting times.

OPEN TOPICS
Please allow two weeks preparation time for topics not previously offered.

GUIDE BOOKS
One supplied free to each party (in advance).

FACILITIES
60 seater Discovery Room with audio-visual equipment and touch tables.

SETTING
Magnificent outlook over the Cairngorms, Insh Marshes, Glen Feshie and the Monadhliaths, with their varied habitats.

RECIPE FOR A TASTY DAY .......

Examples of just some of the possible "menus" you and the Education Officer could create together.

  • A Nursery P1 - P4 visit
    e.g. FACE TO FACE WITH ANIMALS
  • A topic to fit in with 5-14/Standard Grade Guidelines:
    e.g. SCOTTISH WILDLIFE/FOOD CHAIN
  • An English project to encourage those with learning difficulties:
    e.g. WILDLIFE SLEUTHS SEEK WORD CLUES.
  • Fieldwork day practising Observation and Recording skills: (Higher Biology: Coping with Danger, Obtaining Food)
    e.g. THE RED DEER RUT & FEEDING THE CARNIVORES.
